The Children's Museum

The Children’s Museum is in a building that was a prison called Central Penitentiary; during the 1980s the place harbored stories of horror, crime and violence. This prison was closed in 1979, and abandoned for more than 12 years; after this long period of neglect of facilities and multiple projects to take advantage of this space, at the end of 1993 the idea of Costa Rican Center of Science and Culture took shape, and the National Gallery opens; Then on April 27, 1994 it opens its doors Children’s Museum and then continues with other projects such as the National Auditorium (1998) and the Youth Complex (1999) provided in order to strengthen education and encourage national scientific and technological development.

It is an area approximated to 3.804 m2, there you will find multiple activities and exhibitions aimed especially at children and their families; although its name is defined as a museum, in reality it does not follow traditional museological principles of look and don’t touch. On the contrary, it is based on the concepts of experimentation and learning, and the importance of play in learning, creativity, spontaneity and freedom of expression, social interaction and curiosity, among others. The main objective is to contribute to the human beings formation, of critical, dynamic, creative and participatory, through the implementation of complementary activities to formal education. The slogan is "The magic of learning through play". This museum is the perfect place to learn by playing and exploring; this place offers 40 rooms of entertainment, where the child’s learn by playing and exploring. Here thousands of children come to learn through games, experiments and special events. The whole family can learn and have fun in their 40 interactive rooms; where in each of these areas it develops a different theme and entertainment mixed with moral and ethical values such as friendship, effort, happiness, perseverance, patience and integrity. The Children’s Museum has recognized the benefits of learning through play and exploration. Children and adults can learn about the universe, Costa Rica, the human body, nature, animals, modes of transportation, electricity, Egyptian culture, radio, archeology, recycling, television and other subjects.
